ROCKFORD, Ill.---Chicago Wolves goaltender Eddie Lack was 22 seconds away from his fourth shutout of the season, but Rockford forward Jeremy Morin scored in overtime to lift the IceHogs to a 1-0 victory Sunday night at the MetroCentre.
Morin intercepted a clearing attempt by the Wolves defense, made two deft moves on his way toward the net and flipped the puck home from close range at 4:38 of overtime to end the Illinois Lottery Cup contest.
Despite the loss, the Wolves (30-20-2-3) picked up a point to pull within three points of first-place Charlotte (68 points) in the American Hockey League’s Midwest Division.
The Wolves also won the regular-season series with the IceHogs (24-26-2-4) as they went 6-5-1-0 in the 12-game set.
Lack (14-14-3) enjoyed one of his finest efforts of the season for Chicago. He tied his season high with 40 saves as the Wolves teamed up to shut down five Rockford power plays.
The Wolves came up empty on eight power-play opportunities --- one short of their season high for man-advantage chances --- though all-star forward Darren Haydar had a power-play score waved off in the final minute of the second period after Rockford knocked the net off its mooring.
Rockford goaltender Carter Hutton (13-8-2) stopped 29 shots to earn his second shutout of the year.
The Wolves return to Allstate Arena at 7 p.m. Wednesday to face the San Antonio Rampage. To purchase tickets, visit ChicagoWolves.com or call 1-800-THE-WOLVES.
