OKLAHOMA CITY---The Chicago Wolves trailed 3-2 entering the third period but gave up three unanswered goals in the final frame en route to a 6-2 defeat by the Oklahoma City Barons at the Cox Convention Center Friday night.
Right wing Spencer Machacek scored both goals for Chicago (6-8-1-0), while center Riley Holzapfel posted two assists to share the team lead.
After falling into an early 3-0 hole, the Wolves got on the board, 8:00 into the middle frame when Machacek took a rebound in the slot and shot the puck past Oklahoma City goaltender Martin Gerber, stick side.
Machacek closed the scoring gap further, 3-2, when he redirected Holzapfel’s shot into the open side of the net, 14:42 into the second period.
Gerber (9-4-0) stopped 35 of 37 shots for Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma City (10-6-1-0) opened scoring, 3:24 into the first period when left wing Liam Reddox scored on a short-handed breakaway.
Right wing Colin McDonald made the Barons’ lead 2-0, 14:57 into the first frame when he fired a shot from the left faceoff circle past Chicago netminder Peter Mannino, top shelf.
Reddox redirected left wing Linus Omark’s shot between Mannino’s legs, giving the Barons a 3-0 lead, 5:53 into the second period.
The Barons increased their lead, 4-2, 13:02 into the third period. Center Chris Vandevelde skated around the net and his shot banked off a Wolves’ players skate and over the goal line.
Oklahoma City scored again, 15:11 into the last period, when Brad Moran ripped a shot from the left faceoff circle past Mannino to make the score, 5-2.
Mannino (1-2-0) posted 37 saves in the loss.
Defenseman Shawn Belle rounded out scoring, 6-2, with a long shot from the point at 18:23 of the final frame.
The Wolves face off against the San Antonio Rampage at the AT&T Center on Sunday at 3 p.m.
